Cavan visits Wexford

10 Sep 12

Older people’s Networks from both Cavan and Wexford met to exchange ideas, experiences and learning on Wednesday, September 5th in Enniscorthy.

A delegation of 12 members of the Cavan O50 Network attended a meeting of the Executive Committee of Co Wexford Age Equality Network in the offices of Wexford Local Development in Enniscorthy. The Cavan delegation, led by Askamore native Bob Gilbert, gave a presentation on their Age Friendly Communities Toolkit which they have developed over the past two years. Older people in communities across Co. Cavan have used this Toolkit to audit the age-friendliness of their own communities, assessing everything from the availability of toilet facilities to the effectiveness of pedestrian crossings for those with mobility difficulties.

This presentation was well received by the representatives of older people’s organisations from across Co. Wexford with many ideas being put forward for similar type audit’s in local villages and towns here in Wexford.

Following discussions, a visit to Enniscorthy Castle took place and was thoroughly enjoyed by all, visitors and locals alike. The visit finished with dinner and much more discussion until late into the night, covering topics from cuts to home help hours to rural transport. Chairman of Co Wexford Age Equality Network, Seán Kinsella, gratefully received an invitation for a return visit to Cavan to see firsthand how older people are working towards making their local rural communities age friendly.
